Mozambique's government has banned protests following sustained post-election unrest that has left several people dead and dozens others injured. It follows last month's disputed presidential election, won by Frelimo, the party which has governed Mozambique since 1975.

After weeks of post-election protests that have claimed more than a dozen lives in Mozambique, the government has imposed a ban on demonstrations. The unrest broke out in early October, after opposition groups and observers claimed the election was rigged.

Weeks of violent protests have marked the outcome of Mozambique disputed Oct. 9 elections, which saw ruling party Frelimo’s candidate Daniel Chapo declared the winner.

The Mozambican authorities should immediately end internet restrictions imposed since October 25, 2024, and restore full access to social media platforms.
