DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Israel launched an expanded assault on Iran on Sunday, with direct strikes targeting its energy industry and Defense Ministry headquarters, while Tehran unleashed a fresh barrage of missiles blamed for the deaths of four people.

Israel struck Houthi targets at three Yemeni ports and a power plant overnight, in the country’s first attack on Yemen since the Israel-Iran ceasefire.

Iran has spent decades building multi-tiered military capabilities at home and across the region that were at least partly aimed at deterring the United States from attacking it.

The conflict between Iran and the U.S. reached a new, dangerous level after Iran responded to American airstrikes with threats and missile attacks of its own. Air raid sirens blared across Tel Aviv on Sunday as Iran launched a fresh wave of retaliatory strikes.

Hours later, shortly after nightfall, Iran launched a second wave of missiles, which struck a residential street in Haifa, a mixed Jewish-Arab city in northern Israel. The national emergency service reported nine people were injured in the strike, along with two others following a missile impact in the south.

Iran’s top diplomat warned Sunday that the U.S. attacks on its nuclear sites “will have everlasting consequences” and that Tehran “reserves all options” to retaliate.

A classified U.S. assessment says recent airstrikes on Iran-backed groups in Syria and Iraq were far less effective than initially believed, hitting only 1 in 3 targets.

Israeli leaders said the attack was aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb as the country enriches uranium a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels. Iran long has said its program is peaceful and U.S. intelligence agencies have assessed Iran was not actively building a weapon.
