Authorities say Just eight monkeys remain free from the group who broke out of a South Carolina compound that breeds the primates for medical research.

There was animal mayhem in South Carolina as two emus went on the loose – while eight escaped monkeys were already at large. Reports of two large emus running riot in the city of Loris, in Horry County, SC, followed an incident last week when 43 monkeys escaped an Alpha Genesis facility in Beaufort County, SC, the Yemassee Police Department said.

More than half of the rhesus macaque monkeys that escaped from a South Carolina lab have been recovered. As of Monday evening, 30 of the 43 furry runaways, that broke loose Wednesday from the Alpha Genesis Primate Research Center in Yemasee,

The Horry County Police Department wrote about the large missing birds Wednesday, saying, "We are not emu-sed."

Authorities say two monkeys have been returned to a South Carolina compound that breeds the animals for medical research.

Thelma and Louise are out on the town at the same time officials work to collect the 11 remaining escaped Alpha Genesis monkeys.

The two Australian birds, named Thelma and Louise, reportedly escaped from their home in Loris, about 100 miles northeast of Charleston.

The owner of the runaway birds warned residents of the area that they are feral and not trained. Law enforcement is currently with the owner to approve a tranquilizer to help bring the Emus home safet
