Virginia is for winners. A Mega Millions player in Virginia clinched the historic $348 million jackpot Friday night, ending a 20-draw drought and the lottery’s first major win since the game was revamped in April.
Virginia has become one of the nation’s top states for gaming and most of the state’s oversight is handled through the Virginia Lottery – an agency that has grown 20% larger to accommodate those responsibilities.
The Mega Millions jackpot rose to $80 million for the drawing on Friday, July 11 after no one matched all the winning numbers in the drawing on Tuesday, July 8. If someone matches all six numbers on Friday, they will have the option of a one-time cash payment of $35.8 million.
